Dissolved Air Flotation by utp

What is Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)?

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is a highly effective method for treating industrial wastewater. It removes suspended solids, oils, fats, and other light contaminants using fine air bubbles. The kläropro-DAF system by utp is designed for maximum efficiency and flexibility, achieving removal rates of up to 99%. It is available as a modular, containerized solution for easy installation and rapid deployment.

The Technology

How Does a DAF System Work?

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a physico-chemical separation process in which suspended particles are removed from water using gas bubbles. For this purpose, an air-water mixture is pressurized, allowing more gas to dissolve in the water. When the pressure is reduced, the dissolved gases are released, forming fine bubbles that attach to the suspended particles as they rise. This causes the particles to float to the surface, where they can be removed. To support the process, a flocculant is added to the wastewater beforehand.

  1. Influent industrial wastewater enters the flotation unit
  2. Addition of flocculants to bind fine particles
  3. A water-air mixture is pressurized and dissolved gases are released
  4. Fine air bubbles attach to particles and lift them to the surface
  5. Floating sludge is skimmed off – clear water remains at the bottom

Result: Up to 99% oil removal and stable effluent quality, even under fluctuating influent conditions.

Applications of DAF in Industry

Our dissolved air flotation systems are successfully used in many sectors, such as:

  • Food & beverage industry (oils, fats, proteins)

  • Metal processing and electroplating

  • Cosmetics industry (emulsions, surfactants)

  • Iron & steel industry

  • Chemical production

The flotation system can be used as:

  • wastewater pre-treatment (e.g. for indirect dischargers)
  • individual purification stage of a wastewater treatment plant (e.g. direct dischargers, water reuse)
  • sludge separation stage after a physical-chemical treatment
  • wastewater treatment after mechanical pre-treatment

Project Workflow for Building a kläropro DAF System

For projects involving kläropro DAF flotation systems, we focus on professional support and tailored solutions. The construction or expansion of a process water treatment plant requires thorough planning, during which many questions need to be addressed. Expert advice and assistance from the very beginning are therefore crucial. Our utp team supports you throughout the entire process, from initial planning to the ongoing operation of the completed plant. We see ourselves as a long-term partner in this field.

The Current Situation

First, we determine the volumes and loads of process water involved and the desired effluent quality.
We are happy to support you in reviewing any relevant documents.
Next, the future plant location is defined and the site characteristics are assessed, including pipeline routes and terrain layout.
Once the current situation has been analyzed, we move on to the next step in the planning process.

Develop concepts

Jetzt stellen wir uns die Frage „Welcher Anlagenaufbau ist für Ihre Gegebenheiten am besten?“. Following the on-site assessment, we start at the drawing board to develop concepts.
For new installations, we prepare a variety of proposals and alternative designs tailored to your needs. Which type of tank should you opt for? How to arrange the tanks on site?
If there are already existing tanks on site, we will try and integrate them into the new concept of the plant. Mostly it is possible to integrate the tanks completely or just add new ones. A renovation or integration often is the most cost-effective solution. Often, the old concrete tanks are still in very good condition.
Since kläropro treatment plants are used for very specific types of wastewater, we also assess the points where wastewater is generated. Depending on the location, we record the operating procedures, make tests and analyses in the laboratory or install test wastewater treatment plants on site.

Profitability assessment

Since financial aspects are involved, this is one of the most critical points.
We present our developed concepts to you or the responsible decision-makers, provide insight into our figures, and answer your questions.
Based on our concepts, we work together with you to find the most economical solution.

Planning Phase of the Flotation System

Once the exact specifications of the new flotation system have been defined, the crucial phase begins. We are happy to assist you in preparing the complete application documents for building permits and water law approvals.
In addition, we can, if required, prepare all necessary system drawings and construction plans for the plant.
We also offer construction consulting services and can create specifications and construction schedules for you.
At the same time, we plan the production of the system in our own factory. We manufacture all components in-house, including tanks, technical equipment, and control systems. This means we can respond flexibly to short-term changes or special requests, ensuring a tailored solution for your needs.

Delivery and Installation of the Flotation System

After the quality control at the factory, the tested plant will be delivered to the construction site. Our service team is happy to carry out professional on-site installation for you.
A turnkey handover is also no problem for us. This allows us to manage complete projects, including civil works or, for example, the refurbishment of existing tanks.
Even after commissioning, the testing phase, and final acceptance of the plant, we continue to be your reliable and competent partner.
