FBR-container
The fixed-bed reactor in the container
Efficient and compact wastewater treatment thanks to the fixed-bed reactor
Our FBR-containers use the proven fixed-bed process, a biological treatment process that works with solid growth bodies. A stable biofilm forms on these materials, which efficiently breaks down pollutants such as organic compounds and nitrogen compounds.
The large surface area of the biofilm ensures a high cleaning performance, even with fluctuating flow rates or varying wastewater composition. A cascaded mode of operation optimizes efficiency and ensures maximum cleaning performance.
The combination of this innovative process with a compact containerized design results in highly flexible and mobile containerized wastewater treatment plants that are ideal for a wide variety of applications and requirements.
The Technology
How does a utp fixed-bed reactor / FBR-container work?
A cascaded fixed-bed system is based on multiple reaction stages connected in series, each equipped with specifically adapted carrier materials (biofilm carriers). As the wastewater flows through each reactor stage sequentially, each stage provides an optimally designed surface for microorganisms to colonize.
The pollutant concentration decreases from one stage to the next, allowing microorganisms in each stage to adapt to the specific conditions and pollutant levels present there.
The cascaded structure ensures particularly efficient utilization of microorganisms, as each stage operates under ideal conditions that are precisely tailored to the specific pollutant loads. This allows a step-by-step and targeted degradation of a wide variety of contaminants.
As a result, the system can be precisely adapted to different requirements, such as fluctuating wastewater compositions or varying flow rates.
Thanks to this mode of operation, the efficiency of the treatment process is maximized, while at the same time a high level of stability is maintained. The cascaded fixed-bed system thus offers a reliable and high-performance solution for demanding tasks in wastewater treatment.
The general process flow:
- Inlet: Primary treatment of the wastewater to remove inorganic substances.
- Biological treatment: The wastewater flows through the cascaded fixed bed. Oxygen is introduced by an energy-efficient ventilation system.
- Secondary treatment: Separation of the sludge from the treated wastewater
- Automatic control: Adjustment to the given conditions
Technical data FBR-container:
- Flow rate: 5.0 – 20.0 m³/h
- COD degradation rate: 20 – 200 kg/day
- Ammonium degradation: 2.0 – 20.0 kg/day
- Capacity: 100 – 2,000 population equivalents (PE)
- Modularity: Expandable to meet increasing demands

New construction of a wastewater pre-treatment plant in modular container design
In June 2021, utp umwelttechnik GmbH was commissioned to prepare a basic assessment for the construction of a new industrial wastewater pre-treatment plant. The main requirements were a significant reduction of the organic pollution load and regulation of the pH value.
