Existing situation
The Agrofarm Knau eG is located in the south of the city Neustadt an der Orla, Saale-Orla-county, Thuringia. As agricultural direct marketer, the company supplies quality comprising seeds to sausages.
Besides the administration office, also the department „direct marketing“ is located at the site in Knau, which is composed of in detail:
- slaughterhouse
- butchery
- large-scale bakery
- administration department / office
- restaurant with 150 seats
An existing SBR-wastewater treatment plant for 200 PE, built in 2006, was already located at the production site.
Due to the unsatisfying cleaning capacity as well as due to the intended expansion of the bakery, also an expansion including implementation of the existing tanks should be realized.
In March 2019, the order for preparing a basic evaluation for retrofitting and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant was placed with utp umwelttechnik GmbH.

Project details / solution by utp
The existing prefabricated tanks “coarse material separation”, “buffer” and “sludge storage” were cleared, amended by a further prefabricated tank and retrofitted to primary treatment.
The existing 80 m³- tank of the reactor was retrofitted and now serves as sludge treatment and as sludge storage. A new cast-in-place concrete tank with a volume of 150 m³ was built and divided by chamber walls into three basins. The first chamber serves as buffer and storage tank, where the regulation of the pH-value by means of measuring and dosing technology is achieved.
Afterwards, the pretreated wastewater is being pumped by means of two steady-installed submerged pumps into both of the other chambers which are serving as SBR-reactors. Two dry-installed side channel blowers generate the necessary compressed air for operation of the aeration as well as for the air lift pumps. For optimization of the
denitrification as well as for reduction of energy cost, the blower operating times are automatically adjusted by means of a permanent oxygen measurement. The entire control takes place via klärcontrol®-control systems which enable a userfriendly operation by the additional use of several touch panels.
The control system and machine technology is placed in a two-room technology container which is used as
new operational building.
